Dear Abby…I Live To Battle Another Day!

August 6, 2012 , , , ,

Battle on!

The other day my oldest daughter and I were in the car chit-chatting and she was lamenting about going to jr. high. I listened intently and suddenly this amazing response flowed out of me. Almost like an out of body experience. Like I was watching us have this conversation while perched on the roof of the car. First of all I’m happy that she’s comfortable discussing most things with me. She trusts me with her fears. The major win in this scenario was that she was actually happy with my input. “Me, WINNING!”

Although I have become quite proficient at irritating her simply by breathing or embarrass her in front of her friends because, um, I am myself, I take pride in chalking up cool mom points whenever I can. I relish these small moments of victory. Moments when I can be a good listener, a wise sage and a loving mom and it’s actually welcomed and appreciated.

I now know just how crappy I used to make my mom feel when I would scoff at her lack of knowledge about current music or which celebrity was in rehab. You know, those important things that moms should care enough to know about. I’m really surprised that I didn’t permanently pull a muscle with the constant eye-rolling I did. I knew better than to tell her I hated her to her face when I was upset, but I’m sure the message was delivered loud and clear (insert loud mumbling and door slamming here). I could battle to the death. No mercy for you weak mean woman that’s ruining my life.

Life, part 2. Now I’m the meanie who knows nothing and is the recipient of the severe eye-rolling, occasional door slamming and/or verbal assault. I’ve found myself fighting back tears on more than one occasion after my daughter and I have had words. We always make up though and that’s good. It’s just the day to day tiny hills I choose to die on or not in this preteen battle of wills.

The real joy will come when I’m 63 (good Lord) and the phone rings and it’s my wonderful daughter calling to tell me she’s apologizing for all the times she was nasty to me, embarrassed by me and generally an argumentative little shit. Then she will tell me to look in the mailbox where I will find an envelope containing an all expense paid trip around the world. “Me, DREAMING!”

Stay sane, my friends.
